Buying at Chrystals Auctions

You must be registered to bid before you can take part in an auction. If you have registered to bid with either Chrystals Auctions or Murray's in the past twelve months, you will still be registered and have the same paddle number which is valid for both companies. If you are not registered, you must give your details to the Sale Secretary at least half an hour before the sale is due to start, who will then issue you with a paddle number. This takes just a couple of minutes

Before bidding, you should familiarise yourself with our Terms and Conditions. Make sure you have a means to pay - we regret that we do not currently accept credit or debit cards - and that you have means to remove any lots purchased according to the sale terms. This is usually on sale day itself.

Viewing is normally immediately before the sale. Take this opportunity to look at any lots you intend bidding on. The catalogue and images are normally available on-line prior to sale day. Check our next auction and forthcoming auctions pages for details. Catalogues may be purchased on the day for a £1.

Three ways to bid:
  • In Person. The most popular and certain way to bid. When the lot you wish to bid on comes up, give clear signals to the auctioneer once bidding commences. Remember that the price at which the auctioneer closes the bidding (the hammer price) is subject to Buyer's Premium (usually 12.5%+VAT) which is added to the hammer price. If you are the winning bidder, you will be asked to clearly show or tell your paddle number to the auctioneer.
  • Commission bids. Also called absentee or pre-bids, these are written requests to the auctioneer to bid on your behalf up to and including the maximum hammer price you declare on the form. This allows you to bid on items even if you cannot be present at the auction itself. More details and a form are available by clicking here.
  • Telephone bids. You may request a telephone bid on a lot if you cannot be present in the room. If accepted, a member of staff will attempt to call you shortly before your lot comes before the auctioneer. Telephone bids are accepted subject to staff and telephone availability and may be further subject to a minimum starting bid requirement. The onus lies solely with the bidder to be available on a telephone number they supply. Chrystals Auctions are not bound to accept telephone bids and are in no way responsible if a call to a bidder cannot be completed. Requests for telephone bids should be made as early as possible and in any case, not less than 30 minutes before the start of the sale. Remember that bids are subject to Buyer's Premium just as with other types of bidding.
